Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry
Sheriff Joel A. Merry has served as Sheriff of Sagadahoc County since of 2009. A 41-year veteran law enforcement officer who has held leadership roles with various law enforcement and community coalitions. Sheriff Merry has served on the Maine Sheriffs Association executive board for over a decade and is currently serving as the MSA Past President-At-Large.
Sheriff Merry has represented the Maine Sheriffs on a number groups including the statewide Substance Abuse Advisory Board, the Methamphetamine Task Force and the Attorney General Elder Fraud Task Force. He is a member of the Deadly Force Review Panel. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Maine Chiefs of Police Association and previously served as Chair of the State Board of Corrections.
Sheriff Merry has been very involved in wide range of community coalitions and initiatives, involving both youth and elderly. He has served on the Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) Task Force and the Restorative Justice Project in Midcoast Communities. He was appointed by Governor Mills to serve on the Elder Justice Coordinating Partnership and is a member of the Maine Council on Aging.
Has held leadership positions with Healthy Maine Partnership ACCESS Health Steering Committee, and Pioneering Healthier Communities. A past Board Chair of the United Way of Mid Coast Maine. He is a former Board Chair of Tedford Housing.
Has a B.S in Business Studies and Organizational Leadership with a concentration in Human Resource Management. Has an A.S. in Law Enforcement Technology. Graduated from the New England Institute of Law Enforcement Management in 2000 and the National Sheriff’s Institute in 2012.
Recipient of the 2017 Ed Googins Award for leadership in gun safety. Recipient of the 2015 NAMI-Maine CIT Lifetime Achievement Award.
